Move with Intention

All I really thought was that I’d take a Sunday off.

I had no idea what was coming…

The anatomy lab was a Christmas gift to both of us. I wanted Iran ( my husband) to have the same mind-blowing experience as I did in October, so I signed us both up for the April session. And off we went to Colorado Springs, traveling together to the Institute for Anatomical Research for a shared journey through the human body.

This was my second time going through it, which doubles the experience, and quadruples the number of bodies I’ve had the opportunity to learn from at the deepest level. The lessons this time hit much harder.

People die for reasons. And as the artifacts of their existence were revealed, we had ample opportunities to witness how a body could fail.

Primarily, it has to do with the organs.

Organs have their own patterns of movement - it’s called “ motility”. Independent from muscular activation, breathing and even digestion, the organs that give us life all describe unique figure 8 patterns that allow them to do their jobs. If they can’t express motility, their function begins to suffer, and the muscles surrounding them will begin to clamp down as the organ reaches distress.

From there, it can become a perfect storm. The fascia starts to clamp, muscles stop engaging, and eventually what had been viscous slings of tension becomes a sticky cobweb of adhesions. Internal distress creates external strain, and all mobility grinds to a halt around the “scene of the crime”.

To put it simply, the solution is movement.

Conscious movement that has the tenderness to reach inside and ask “ how are you doing and how can I help you” to the organs that are so closely nestled in front of our spines. This is a radically different approach from coaching the body to make shapes - directing the limbs to extend here and there, or coaching the shoulders to pull back in an effort to improve posture from the outside in. Taking the time to unravel the stitches we’ve created internally is a different kind of physical discipline that can powerfully affect the entirety of our movement practice.

Internal awareness bridges the gap between interception and “internal proprioception” ( awareness of our body state, and awareness of our internal positioning). Integrating these levels of “ ception” empowers us to create authentic movement from the most primal levels, and clear pathways for healing within the body.

I’m still learning from my experiences in the lab. The “aha” moments emerge as I teach.

I’m happy to share this excerpt from the Jedi Spine Tricks lecture I gave on Thursday at Pilgrim’s way. An active mobility body scan, we journey through the anatomy of your lower body to liberate, well, ALL of you.

I’m offering some cool things in May:

Ultima XS Success is a 3 class series exploring the Ultima XS tower. A hybrid Gyrotoner and pulley tower, this piece of equipment provides a unique playground for those who love the Gyrotonic system. Classes combine classic exercises from both the Gyrotoner and Pulley Tower material, developing confidence in setup and an understanding of “angles of force”. E

mpowering students to create individualized setups that support their desired result.

And from May 19-21 I’m at the Seed Center SF offering Jedi Spine Tricks Part III - the Breath Star, and Galileo 101 ( an introduction to Galileo training). If you’ve been curious about this revolutionary plate and what it can do for you, now is your chance to find out!

Yes, private sessions are also available.

I can’t wait to share all of this with you,

Dear Friends, As another year unfolds, this thought comes to mind: the Act of Giving is often the greatest gift we can receive. This year Reader, I invite you to support an institution that has literally changed my life, along with many others – the Institute for Anatomical Research (IAR) in Colorado Springs. By joining forces, we can create a ripple of positive change far greater than any single gift. Shaping the world we wish to see, one act of generosity at a time. Why the IAR Matters The...

And then there are the weeks where life overtakes you like some kind of steamroller. Good morning, Reader This week's email will be a bit different from our usual dives into life and movement. Why? Because sometimes life has other plans... You wake up on Friday, wondering where the week went, with the items on your to-do list dancing in your head like Sugarplums at an underground rave. It's been one of those weeks. Chaos isn't necessarily synonymous with negativity or stress, but it still can...

I'm not so sure that I agree. I've lived a full life in every decade, but there certainly are differences. The lessons in my 30's had to do with not internalizing the external: that difficult circumstances don't define your worth, that people's perceptions of you didn't have to define you, and that...
