What Lies Beneath

Published 3 months ago • 2 min read

In every tech innovator’s tale, there’s a common thread - a childhood curiosity that drove them to dismantle a television set, exploring the hidden world behind the screen.

This grand, deconstructive foray into the world of unseen circuits and hidden mechanisms is emblematic not just of a nascent curiosity about technology, but of a deeper, more universal desire: the drive to understand what lies beneath the surface.

In the hands of a child taking apart a television, there lies more than mere play. This act is a primal expression of an inquisitive nature, a tactile exploration into the workings of the world. The television, with its complex circuits and mysterious components, becomes a microcosm of a larger, more intricate puzzle. Just as the child seeks to uncover the secrets held within the box of images and sounds, so too does the artist, the doctor, or the scientist seek to unravel the enigmas of the human body.

This shared desire to understand what lies beneath the surface is not merely about the acquisition of knowledge. It is a deeper, more profound yearning to connect with the world in its most fundamental form. For the artist, capturing the subtlety of muscle tension or the interplay of light and shadow is not just an exercise in representation; it is a journey into the very essence of human expression. For the yoga instructor, emphasizing alignment and muscle engagement transcends the physical; it becomes a dialogue with the body, an exploration of its capabilities and limits.

In this spirit of curiosity and reverence for discovery, we are proud to introduce "Illuminated Anatomy," an innovative anatomy course that I have developed with artist Paul Richmond. This course is a modern-day embodiment of the Renaissance tradition, where art and science converge to explore the wonders of the human body. In "Illuminated Anatomy," we teach you what lies beneath your skin by painting the muscles and bones directly onto my body, as I explain their functions and how they all work together.

Our course begins by establishing a solid foundation in anatomical knowledge, focusing on the key structures of the arms and hands. This is followed by a series of movement exercises, allowing you to explore and understand these parts in motion, capturing their fluidity and grace. Gesture drawing then becomes a tool for artistic expression, teaching you to capture the essence and energy of these structures. The body paint demonstrations are particularly impactful, as Paul uses this medium to bring the anatomy to life on my skin, providing a vivid and tangible learning experience.

"Illuminated Anatomy" is not just another anatomy course. It's a journey that bridges the gap between the technical and the artistic, between understanding and feeling. It's designed for mind/body movement instructors and artists who seek not only to understand the human form but to connect with it on a deeper level. This course is a celebration of the human body, an invitation to explore its mysteries and express its beauty through art and movement. Join us on this journey of discovery, where learning becomes an art form, and the human body reveals itself as a masterpiece of nature.

Our first section: the Arms and Hands will be released on 02/01. Students have lifetime access to the lessons, so you can revisit them as many times as you want. Unlock your creative potential in capturing the beauty and complexity of the arms and hands.

Register before 02/01 to enjoy a 40% discount!"
